"They have earned the right to express their opinions"

Jon Favreau is the latest Marvel Universe member to respond to Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola's comments that superhero films are "not cinema" and "despicable."

The Iron Man and Iron Man 2 director seems to have taken their criticism in stride, telling CNBC, "These two guys are my heroes, and they have earned the right to express their opinions."

He continued, "I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing if they didn't carve the way. They served as a source of inspiration, you can go all the way back to Swingers."

Favreau concluded, "They can express whatever opinion they like."

His response echoes those of Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn and Iron Man himself Robert Downey Jr.

Gunn replied to Coppola's recent comments, saying, "Not everyone will be able to appreciate them, even some geniuses. And that's okay."

Downey Jr., meanwhile, replied to Scorsese's initial comments by telling Howard Stern, "It would be like saying 'Howard Stern isn't radio' — it makes no sense."
