Here Are Five Films We're Dying to See at Toronto After Dark 2016

BY Exclaim! StaffPublished Oct 13, 2016

For over a decade, Toronto After Dark has been showcasing the best in international and Canadian cult, horror, sci-fi and action cinema. This year promises to be no different, with 20 films and a plethora of shorts set to screen at the Scotiabank Theatre for nine days beginning on October 13.

Here are a few films we're excited to check out.

The Void
Directed by Jeremy Gillespie, Steven Kostanski
Friday, October 21 at 9:30 p.m. and 11:59 p.m.

The Canadian filmmakers behind cult sensations Manborg and Father's Day get the honour of closing out this year's festival with the serious and sinister looking The Void, which is having its Canadian premiere and screening twice on October 21. Part creature feature, part siege movie, early reviews have drawn comparisons to the work of John Carpenter — expect tickets to this title to sell out soon.

The Lure
Directed by Agnieszka Smoczynska
Friday, October 21 at 7:00 p.m.

Since its Sundance debut, the horror musical featuring man-eating mermaids from Polish director Agnieszka Smoczynska has been gobbling up awards, and with good reason: this sounds like one of the more strange and surreal feature-length directorial debuts in recent memory.

In a Valley of Violence
Directed by Ti West
Sunday, October 16 at 6:45 p.m.

Didn't get your Ethan Hawke-in-a-Western fill while watching Antoine Fuqua's recent Magnificent Seven remake? Award-winning horror filmmaker Ti West's SXSW sensation about a vagabond gunslinger duelling it out with an evil sheriff (played by John Travolta) is sure to delight.

Blood Father
Directed by Jean-François Richet
Sunday, October 16 at 9:30 p.m.

Billed as a return to form for action star-turned-towering racist Mel Gibson, this USA/France co-production about a tattoo parlour owner who will stop at nothing to save his missing daughter looks badass-as-hell. Don't believe us? It has a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes right now.

As the Gods Will
Directed by Takashi Miike
Tuesday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m.

Ichi the Killer mastermind Takashi Miike's 2014 feature gets a second life overseas thanks to Toronto After Dark, who are bringing the Battle Royale-style spiritual horror to Toronto for its first-ever screening in the city. To get an idea of what's in-store, check out the trailer below.
