Hari Kondabolu Suggests 'The Simpsons' Is Racist in the First Trailer for 'The Problem with Apu'

In an interview with Exclaim! last year, Hari Kondabolu discussed the inaccurate and reductive ways brown people are portrayed in pop culture. He mentioned Apu from The Simpsons, calling the Kwik-E-Mart clerk "a very racially inaccurate and upsetting character voiced by a white guy." Now, he's made a feature-length documentary about the character.

Called The Problem with Apu, the documentary sees Kondabolu expose just how troubling Hank Azaria's caricature of an Indian man really is. The film features commentary from Aparna Nancherla, Kal Penn, Aasif Mandvi, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Hasan Minhaj, Maulik Pancholy and Whoopi Goldberg, among others.

In the trailer, available below, Simpsons writer Dana Gould does a terrible job defending the overblown voice they've attributed to the character. Further, Azaria gleefully discusses just how stereotypical they made Apu.
