Greta Gerwig's excellent semi-autobiographical coming-of-age film Lady Bird recently hit theatres, and the writer/director just shared some insight into the music that soundtracks the story.
On Late Night with Seth Meyers last night (November 20), Gerwig revealed that she wrote individualized letters to artists in order to procure the use of their music in the movie. Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River," Alanis Morissette's "One Hand in My Pocket" and Dave Matthews Band's "Crash Into Me" all feature prominently in Lady Bird, and it turns out Gerwig's personal touch played a big role in making that happen.
She gushed to JT, informing him that "Your rise corresponded exactly with my very awkward puberty" and credited his work (both solo and with *NSYNC) as fundamental to helping her achieve adulthood. She particularly oozed enthusiasm over 2003's Justified, admitting that she bought it on CD and cassette tape, before making her plea to include "Cry Me a River" in her film.
She similarly fangirled over Jagged Little Pill to Morissette and told Matthews that she would play his music on loop in her bedroom and "imagine what it would be like to be in love, to go on a roadtrip, to have wild adventures, to create art, to be a person in the world."
Given her genuine appreciation and earnest enthusiasm for their work, it's hardly surprising that they all granted her permission to use the songs.
