Famed French actor Gérard Depardieu (The Life of Pi, Green Card, Cyrano de Bergerac) has been accused of rape and sexual assault by a young female actor.
According to French media, the allegations against the 69-year-old were made by a 22-year-old, whose identity has not been revealed.
The alleged crimes took place earlier this month at one of Depardieu's Parisian residences.
The alleged victim made her statement to police in southern France, who then passed it on to prosecutors in the capital. The two parties apparently knew each other before the alleged crime took place.
"I had a long meeting with Gérard Depardieu and I am absolutely convinced his innocence will be established," Depardieu's lawyer Hervé Temime told France Info radio [via the BBC].
The actor was reportedly "shaken" by the allegations, which went against "everything he is and respects."
