Today the world lost a music icon, as legendary film composer Ennio Morricone passed away at the age of 91. With a career that stretched for more than seven decades and discography that includes hundreds upon hundreds of albums, his work touched a vast and varied group of fans over the years. As such, many have now paid tribute to the fallen maestro.

Tributes have come in from all corners of the music industry. Among those are posts from artists such as Massive Attack, El-P, New Order and Morricone collaborator Yo-Yo Ma, while film industry figures such as Kevin Smith, Edgar Wright, Antonio Banderas and James Woods have all honoured the late composer.

Metallica — who used Morricone's "The Ecstasy of Gold" from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly to open their concerts ever since 1983 — also penned a pair of tribute posts.

Beyond that, there are posts from the Academy Awards, Criterion Collection, Sonor Music Editions and multiple labels who worked with Morricone over the years.

You can see just some of the tributes to Morricone below.

Perhaps our coolness is overstated, we're just fans ourselves who try our best to stock great stuff we don't see everywhere else. Thanks so much to @thehodgepodgelodge for sharing the love for Morricone. #repost ・・・ Some of the #enniomorricone collection I'll be playing today, many ordered from @dustygroove back in early 2000's because they were the only American store cool enough to import them AND write thoughtful descriptions of each album so you'd know what you'd be getting into, which was really helpful since Morricone scores span many styles. #ripenniomorricone. • • • • • • #enniomorricone #enniomorriconemusic #giallofilm #spaghettiwestern #70sitalianmusic #70sitaliansploitation #soundtracklover #moviegrooves #themaestro #italiancinema #cinemaitaliano #60sitalianmusic #italianlegend #morriconerocks #italiancinema #typography #vintagetypography #retrotypography #vintagefont #filmaddict #cinephile

#Repost @lazydogpress with @get_repost ・・・ Il Maestro Ennio Morricone è scomparso ieri sera. #morricone #enniomorricone #mauriziobaroni #lazydog #lazydogpress #inbookswetrust #ibwt
