Eminem Performed "Lose Yourself" at the Oscars Last Night and Nobody Knows Why

Especially not Martin Scorsese

The Oscars went host-less last night (February 9), but for once in its 92-year history, the awards show could have used some explaining — like when Eminem came out and performed a song that came out 18 years ago.

This year's Best Original Song nominees each performed during last night's ceremony, and Billie Eilish's special performance turned out to be a Beatles cover for the In Memoriam reel.

But Eminem's performance remains without any particular context. Sure, he won the award for Best Original Song for "Lose Yourself" from 8 Mile in 2003, but he didn't even bother showing up to the event then. And it's not like it's a particularly significant milestone when it comes to celebrating artistic anniversaries.

Nevertheless, following a random montage of famous songs from films, the screen lifted and Eminem performed. He later apologized via Twitter for missing the ceremony 18 years ago.

Everyone in the crowd seemed to love it once the shock wore off, but Twitter still had questions.
