David Lynch Says There's No Secret Film After All: "That's a Total Rumour"

"I have no new film coming out...It is not happening. I don't have a project. I have nothing at Cannes"

Yesterday, it was reported that a 'secret' David Lynch film — his first full-length feature since 2006's Inland Empire — would be premiering at this year's Cannes. However, according to the man himself, that's a bunch of hooey!

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lynch was asked about the widely-reported rumours of a hush-hush new film featuring long-time collaborator Laura Dern

"I have no new film coming out," he responded, dashing the dreams of Lynch fans everywhere. "That's a total rumour. So there you are. It is not happening. I don't have a project. I have nothing at Cannes. It's unfortunate. It got built up that people thought, 'Oh, that'd be nice.' But there is something new, but it's not mine. I don't know whose it is. They say there's something new at Cannes, and they don't say whose it is, and some people thought it was my film, but it's not. So we'll wait and see, and see whose it is."

That seems pretty definitive, so unless this denial is part of a gag to keep us on our toes, it seems like the whole thing was indeed a rumour that picked up a little too much steam.

Rather than creating a secret film, Lynch says he's been spending his time "working on painting and sculpture each day. And I've been working on Lost Highway color-correcting and timing."
