Yesterday, we learned that legendary Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg was scheduled to shoot a new film called Crimes of the Future this summer. Now, more information has been confirmed.

In the initial announcement, we learned that Crimes would star frequent Cronenberg collaborator Viggo Mortensen. That was confirmed today, along with news that the cast will also include Kristen Stewart, Don McKellar, Léa Seydoux, Scott Speedman, Welket Bungué and Lihi Kornowski.

Deadline also has published some plot details, explaining that this will be Cronenberg's first original sci-fi script since 1999's eXistenZ, as well as his first feature since 2014's Maps to the Stars

As the publication explains, the film takes "a deep dive into the not-so-distant future where humankind is learning to adapt to its synthetic surroundings. This evolution moves humans beyond their natural state and into a metamorphosis, altering their biological makeup. While some embrace the limitless potential of trans-humanism, others attempt to police it."

Deadline continues: "Either way, 'Accelerated Evolution Syndrome,' is spreading fast. Saul Tenser is a beloved performance artist who has embraced Accelerated Evolution Syndrome, sprouting new and unexpected organs in his body. Along with his partner Caprice, Tenser has turned the removal of these organs into a spectacle for his loyal followers to marvel at in real time theatre. But with both the government and a strange subculture taking note, Tenser is forced to consider what would be his most shocking performance of all."

Of the movie, Cronenberg himself said, "I have unfinished business with the future."

Adding more hype to the project, Canadian soundtrack great and Cronenberg regular Howard Shore (The Fly, The Lord of the Rings) will complete the score.

When it's complete, Crimes of the Future will be released in 2022 by NEON in the United States and MK2 | MILE END in Canada.
