The natural world's unofficial chief narrator of the last 60 years, 94-year-old David Attenborough, has finally joined Instagram.
His introduction to the platform is about as timely as could be, considering the state of the world amid ongoing climate crises. It seems Instagram's users are in concurrence, having helped Attenborough to break the record for being the fastest-ever to reach a million followers on the platform, according to Guinness World Records.
Annihilating his competitor for the title, Jennifer Aniston, Attenborough got his first million after just four hours and 44 minutes, and has already gained 3.2 million followers as of press time. His two inaugural video posts have also reached a combined viewership of nearly 13 million.
"I am making this move and exploring this new way of communication to me because, as we all know, the world is in trouble," he says in his first clip. "Over the next few weeks, I'll be recording messages to explain what the problems are and how we can deal with them."
The account is being run by BBC filmmaker Jonnie Hughes and World Wildlife Fund's Colin Butfield who both worked on Netflix's A Life on Our Planet. With the account's first two posts, they promise a bunch of "exclusive clips and behind the scenes content" to come.
"Social media isn't David's usual habitat," they wrote in a post. "So while he's recorded messages solely for Instagram, like the one in this post, we're helping to run this account."
The account was launched ahead of the release of Attenborough's upcoming documentary film. A Life on Our Planet arrives on Netflix on October 4.
