The year 2020 brought a lot of challenging events into focus, many of which we're still feeling the effects of to this day. It was a hard year for everyone, so it's easy to forget that the year kicked off on a high note with Netflix's incredible Emmy-winning docuseries, Cheer.

While coronavirus appeared to claim the show's second season due to in-person filming challenges — with the cancellation of the annual National Cheerleading Championship in Daytona, FL, back in March 2020 — the show apparently lives on, and Netflix has a Season 2 trailer to prove it.

The second instalment — which will arrive in a nine-episode order on January 12 — sees the return of Navarro College cheer coach Monica Aldama, as well as Season 1 stars Lexi Brumback, Gabi Butler, La'Darius Marshall and Morgan Simianer. It remains unclear if breakout star Jerry Harris will be returning to the series, following the federal sexual misconduct allegations levelled against him back in September 2020.

Executive producer Greg Whiteley said of the new batch of episodes:

This season covers events as they unfolded, beginning in January 2020 through April 2021, following Navarro College and their rival Trinity Valley Community College on their journeys to the national championship. The new episodes also tackle extremely difficult moments, including the impact of COVID-19 and criminal charges against one of Navarro's former team members. It was inspiring, heartbreaking, sometimes frustrating, and ultimately moving to be a part of their lives.

Season 2 was directed by Whiteley and produced by One Potato Productions and Boardwalk Pictures.
