Beloved Broadway actress Carol Channing has passed away at the age of 97. She would have turned 98 on January 31.
According to her publicist, Channing suffered two strokes in the last year, and died of natural causes at 12:31 a.m. local time this morning in Rancho Mirage, CA.
Channing was best known for her role as Dolly Levi in the Broadway show Hello, Dolly!, for which she won the 1964 Tony Award for Best Actress. She also memorably appeared in shows like Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Vamp, Show Girl and Lorelei.
She also appeared in films, garnering a Golden Globe win and Academy Award nomination for her performance in 1967's Thoroughly Modern Millie.
Among her other accomplishments, Channing was the first celebrity to perform at a Super Bowl halftime show, she was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1981, she received a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award in 1995, and she was awarded the Oscar Hammerstein prize for lifetime achievement in theatre in 2004.
