Like the majority of festivals this year, Canzine has taken its annual event online for 2020, and organizers have now shared what the 25th edition of Canada's largest zine festival will look like in a virtual space.
Running from October 24 to 26 at Canzine.ca, festivalgoers from around the globe will be able to explore Canzine's 2020 edition through voyaging between 18 interactive "lands," all of which have been illustrated by an independent artist specifically for this year's event.
Fantastical places like Comix Cave, Librarian's Lagoon, Punks Path, Sci-Fi Shore and Riot Grrrl River will allow visitors to browse and purchase creations from over 250 zine and underground vendors.
Each land will also host special events including readings, video screenings, zine library tours, workshops, indie video games, all-ages programming and more.
"Canzine is opening the gates to a digital zine-i-verse where zine mavens can not only shop and support creators, but also be encouraged to play, explore, and enjoy at their own pace," Broken Pencil editor Jonathan Valelly said of this year's edition in a statement.
"There has never been a greater sense of urgency and radical possibility surrounding the zine medium," he continued. "The importance of autonomous, material, secure print media is undeniable. Zines can have a real impact, and that's true from Leftist to community group zines to the smallest autobio-comic, chapbook or art experiment. They all play a role."
