Canadian Soccer Player Wore a Tampon Up His Nose at the World Cup, Just Like 'She's the Man'

Atiba Hutchinson must be a fan of the 2006 Amanda Bynes comedy

Canada may have been eliminated from the World Cup, but this weekend was still a defining moment for the country's national soccer team. No, we're not referring to the team's first-ever World Cup goal. Rather, team captain Atiba Hutchinson wore a tampon up his nose to stop a nosebleed — just like in the 2006 Amanda Bynes comedy She's the Man.

Hutchinson evidently got a nosebleed about halfway through the second half, and he stuck what appears to be a tampon into his nostril. And he wore it proudly, not even bothering to cut the string to be a bit more discreet.

This is basically identical to a plot point in She's the Man, in which Viola (played by Bynes) poses as her own twin brother, Sebastian, in order to join the boys' soccer team. When she is discovered with tampons while pretending to be Sebastian, she stuffs one up her nose and says it's a good way to manage nosebleeds. The film is directed by Andy Fickman and is based on Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.

Sports writer Ella Brockway pointed out the She's the Man connection on Twitter. It went viral, and She's the Man began trending on the social network.
