Cassie Jaye's 2016 film The Red Pill has attracted a great deal of controversy thanks to its subject matter. The film is billed as "a feminist journey into the men's rights movement," though it ultimately emerges as a movie that's sympathetic to MRAs and highly critical of feminism. Screenings of The Red Pill are often met with controversy, and another has just been shut down in Calgary.
Last month, a screening of the film was cancelled at the University of Calgary after promotional materials were criticized for using offensive language. The screening had been organized by the Wildrose on Campus Calgary group, who sent out an email with the subject line "Feminism is cancer."
After that one was cancelled, the screening was rebooked at Calgary's beloved arthouse cinema the Plaza Theatre. The theatre, a staple of Kensington, was massively criticized for allowing the controversial film to be shown.
The Red Pill was meant to screen at the Plaza tomorrow (April 4), but the organization has since cancelled the event. In a Facebook post, they said, "The film 'The Red Pill' is no longer showing at our theatre this Tuesday. Doors will be open at 8pm for our scheduled showing of 'Hidden Figures' at 9pm."
The Facebook post has now been shared multiple times, prompting some seriously angry posts from men's rights activists. Further, the theatre's reviews page is being overrun with 1-star reviews from pissed off internet trolls.
In December, a screening of the film was also cancelled in Ottawa.
