It looks as though the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is starting to clean up its membership. After ousting Harvey Weinstein from its ranks last year, the organization behind the Oscars has now booted Bill Cosby and Roman Polanski.
Cosby was found guilty of three counts of aggravated indecent assault last month, while Polanski plead guilty to the statutory rape of a 13-year-old in 1977.
The Academy voted to boot both members on Tuesday (May 1) and publicly announced its decision today. In a statement, the Academy said its board members "voted to expel actor Bill Cosby and director Roman Polanski from its membership in accordance with the organization's Standards of Conduct".
The organization added, "The Board continues to encourage ethical standards that require members to uphold the Academy's values of respect for human dignity."
In the Academy's 91-year history, it has only expelled four people. In addition to Weinstein, Cosby and Polanski, the first person booted was Carmine Caridi, whose membership was cancelled in 2004 after he shared his Oscar screeners with a friend and they leaked online.
