Given the cinematic, mood-setting nature of their music, it's kinda wild that Beach House had never scored a film before. But after more than a decade together, the Baltimore duo is correcting that with their debut film score for Netflix's Along for the Ride.
The film, directed by fellow Baltimorean Sofia Alvarez, is a young adult romance based on the novel of the same name by Sarah Dessen. One might expect Beach House's debut film score to lean a little artier or more indie, but they've always been occupied by enormous teenage feeling — hello, Teen Dream — so this actually makes a lot of sense.
The film is also Alvarez's directorial debut, having been previously known for writing Netflix's 2018 teen rom-com hit To All the Boys I've Loved Before and its 2020 sequel To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You.
Along for the Ride arrives on Netflix on April 22, and it tells the story of a girl meeting a mysterious stranger and learning to be spontaneous while living with her dad in a seaside town. Emma Pasarow and Belmont Cameli star in the lead roles, and the supporting cast is rounded out by Andie MacDowell, Dermot Mulroney and Kate Bosworth.
It's not clear if the music in the trailer is Beach House — some of it does sound vaguely like the more muscular parts of this year's Once Twice Melody — but you can check it out below.
