'American Idol' Contestant Benjamin Glaze Is Sad His First Kiss Was with Katy Perry

"I wanted to save it for my first relationship"

Last week, the newly rebooted American Idol aired a segment where then 19-year-old singer Benjamin Glaze had his first kiss with new co-host Katy Perry. It was a viral moment, to be sure, but it wasn't too happy for Glaze — he says Perry kissed him on the lips without first asking.

Speaking with the New York Times, Glaze, now 20, explained that the moment wasn't what he had intended for his first real kiss. "I was a tad bit uncomfortable," he said, explaining that he had serious intentions for the romantic gesture. "I wanted to save it for my first relationship. I wanted it to be special."

Instead, Perry landed an impromptu smooch on Glaze's lips when he was leaning in to kiss her on the cheek. "Would I have done it if she said, 'Would you kiss me?' No, I would have said no," he said. "I know a lot of guys would be like, 'Heck yeah!' But for me, I was raised in a conservative family and I was uncomfortable immediately. I wanted my first kiss to be special."

Perhaps the real lesson here is that shows like American Idol should stick to singing instead of, well, making unwanted physical contact with contestants.
