It's been a while since Adam McKay directed a straight-up comedy, opting instead to deliver politically charged and pissed off movies like Vice and The Big Short. Maybe it's for the best, then, that he hasn't returned to his beloved comedy Step Brothers for a sequel, because he's got some wild (and topical) ideas for the characters.
In an interview with the New York Times, McKay said that Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly's loveably buffoonish characters would be staunch Trump supporters and QAnon fanatics if they had a sequel.
"They'd be way into it, and they'd be torturing [Richard] Jenkins and [Mary] Steenburgen's characters with it, and they would eventually be having meetings at the house and somehow QAnon would drift into Jenkins's work life and the Q Shaman would show up at Jenkins's workplace," McKay said. "They also would have loved Trump. I don't want to speak for Ferrell and Reilly, but I think you could safely assume they would agree with that."
Released in 2008, Step Brothers grossed $128 million USD worldwide. Since then, a sequel has been much requested but has never materialized.
Last year, a YouTuber mashed the movie up with The Lighthouse.
