Rick and Morty has amassed an obsessive fanbase over its four seasons on the air, but no one has taken the time to study Rick's near-constant stream of burps. Well, until now.

Researcher Brooke Kidner has taken it upon herself to dig into the belches in search of a deeper linguistic meaning.

"There has not been any serious attempts to acoustically or phonetically describe the characteristics of belching in over 60 years," Kidner said in a story published by SciTechDaily

In her study, Kidner noted that human speech utilizes a great deal of nontraditional words like groans and gasps, but belching has not been taken seriously as a "paralinguistic" items.

Kidner found more than 200 belches throughout Rick and Morty and used her analysis to explore the sound's rumble, jitter and shimmer compared to normal language.

Kidner recently shared her findings at the 178th Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America. Find one example of her depiction of a Rick and Morty belch below.
