Trey Parker and Matt Stone have revealed plans to save Casa Bonita — the troubled Colorado Mexican restaurant that appeared multiple times in South Park and recently filed for bankruptcy.

"We want to buy Casa Bonita and treat it right. I feel like it was neglected even before the pandemic," Parker told The Hollywood Reporter.

As previously reported, the company who owns Casa Bonita, Summit Family Restaurants, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April. Due to court proceedings, the future of the restaurant has been up in the air, but Parker made his intentions to buy the eatery very clear.

"We are absolutely trying to buy it," Parker said. "We are going to do everything we can. We want to make it right and make it amazing."

Located just outside Denver in Lakewood, CO, the restaurant was the focus of the 2003 South Park episode "Casa Bonita." In it, Kyle plans his birthday party at Casa Bonita, and he describes it as "the Disneyland of Mexican restaurants." The episode was based on the South Park creators' childhood memories of visiting the real Casa Bonita. It was also featured in other later South Park episodes.

Parker explained that additional unidentified Colorado-based restaurateurs are involved in the deal, and should it go through, they have some big plans for Casa Bonita.

"We started talking about the changes we're going to make — mostly with the food," Parker said. "We're going to make really awesome food. I was already thinking about how I was going to make Black Bart's Cave a little bigger."

Casa Bonita closed last March due to COVID-19, and it never reopened. The Colorado location was founded in 1974.

"It's just sitting there. It sucks," Parker said. "For a moment when it was like, 'Casa Bonita is going to close down,' we said, 'We're going to go buy it.' And I felt like it was the crowning achievement of my life."
