Eisenhauer
Time of Year

By Josiah Hughes

Vancouver, BC-based indie pop quintet Eisenhauer — fronted by married couple Jeremy Eisenhauer and Sheree Plett — have proven themselves with Time of Year, their sophomore album. Like their label chief and producer Jonathan Anderson, the band explore an often quiet, distinctly Canadian approach to song craft. Complete with lush guitars and a muted rhythm section, the band paint an ideal backdrop for their soothing harmonies. Songs like "What Have I Done?" and the title track are perfected in their wintry lull, while "Feel The Same" and "Sunday" show an up-tempo side. In feebler hands, this music could come across as boring but on Time of Year, Eisenhauer prove they have the restraint to work best in hushed tones. (Anniedale)

Flowers of Hell - Come Hell or High Water
After Arcade Fire brought elements of orchestral music to the indie mainstream, a slew of groups jumped on the bandwagon, incorporating string or horn sections into their music. Rarer were actual pop music-inspired orchestras capable of creating music that came off as anything beyond an experiment i ...Read More
Mika Miko - We Be XUXA
Thanks to the hype of the Smell and their surrounding bands (No Age, Health, Abe Vigoda, Mae Shi), L.A. youth punk quintet Mika Miko have spent a good chunk of their six years together feeling the hype. Still, they've never released a fully realized album. Their debut, 2006's C.Y.S.L.A.B.F., ...Read More
Pink Mountaintops - Outside Love
If Pink Mountaintops' debut was about sex and Axis of Evol about politics, then the theme of album number three is love or, as the title says, being outside of it. Sure, we've seen the topic in the previous work of Stephen McBean — the head rock'n'roll mystic behind Pink Mountaintops and its ...Read More

In their suit and do-rag, respectively, Chromeo's Dave Macklovitch and Patrick Gemayel might look like the kind of duo who'd take themselves too seriously to allow album-release excitement to show through, but they're not. Over the phone from Sweden, they're both utterly genuine, their excitement to be releasing their third album, Business Casual (on Sept. 14) utterly transparent.... Read More
