Lye By Mistake
Fea Jur

By Keith Carman

You know those warnings they put up for epilepsy sufferers about shows with flashing lights? Something like that needs to be offered with Lye By Mistake's latest release. A jarring experience, the album is so hyperactive, intense and overwhelming one thinks they're having some sort of seizure as their ears struggle to process every nuance in the world all at once. A little less aggressive than contenders Psyopus, yet no less frantic, the band's disgusting technical ability results in jazz-influenced progressive metal that steals from the likes of Weather Report, 2112-era Rush and a weird co-pilfering of Santana's salsa-infused guitar and Satriani's endless fret board antics. From sublimely intricate, melodic passages rife with nuances to blaring rock/metal boasting searing guitar solos and all points in between, Fea Jur is a rousing musician's musician experience that shocks and angers as much as it rocks and swaggers. Nile - Those Whom the Gods Detest

Devin Townsend Project - Addicted
Upon first glance, the new name Devin Townsend Project seems like a redundant, or even sly, move, just a rebranding of the man and his creative genius/insanity. But listening to Addicted, it's clear that the name is descriptive, a clue to figuring this project out. The changing cast are part ...Read More

Saturday night is meant for hand pumping and fraternal writhing, and nothing inspires it like Parisian pop. With an armoury of feel-good songs — almost all single-worthy — and a stellar warm-up act in Holy Fuck, French six-piece Phoenix played a joyous and infectiously amiable Sound Academy show.Full Review
One of this city’s superstar DJs, Misstress Barbara specializes in big beats for the masses, and with her three-piece band Girls on a Ducati, she’s extending her house pop chops to a more traditional live setting. With a guitar and mic, as well as keys and effects, she’s a capable front-woman but he... Full Review
The deliberately lo-fi, yet earnest, split between Transit and Man Overboard sounds like the product of a bunch of friends growing up on punk and hardcore throughout the '90s. The hardcore leanings of Boston fivesome Transit lay the groundwork for the pop punk tendencies of the Jersey kids in Man Ov... Full Review
