Ice Cube Kool Haus, Toronto ON - August 19, 2006 By Noel Dix Though a couple of his film choices have been questionable, you can’t knock the way Cube hustles. Even though he might be making movies for children when it comes to his acting career, one of hip-hop’s most important figures isn’t dropping verses with Jennifer Lopez on the hook. Cube has always kept shit straight when it comes to his musicianship and he made sure the crowd in attendance understood this fact to the fullest. After leading the believers in a chant of “fuck you, Ice Cube,” Doughboy blasted into classics “Check Yo’ Self” and “Steady Mobbin’” with raw energy and intensity as if his credibility in the rap game depended on it. Cube even dug into rare N.W.A. territory, blasting through “Straight Outta Compton” and “Gangsta Gangsta” to further strengthen his quest to remind cats that he’s one of the illest to ever grab a mic. Though it was the classics that got the largest rise, you have to admit that his new material sounds pretty tight, possibly because the stripped down production travelled the concrete walls of the Kool Haus with more clarity than the dusty grooves found on gems like “Jackin’ For Beats.” Cube’s clever and downright honesty in between cuts helped solidify the fact that Cube simply never fell off in regards to his musical career; people need to get off this legend’s case on the Hollywood tip.
