Kevin Hearn and Thin Buckle
The Miracle Mile

By Vish Khanna

Kevin Hearn’s music is like a dream. Not a dream come true necessarily, but something surreal that is somehow tangible; a real experience that is tricky to grasp. The pop artist of the Barenaked Ladies, Hearn’s reputation as a gifted multi-instrumentalist precedes him on The Miracle Mile, his latest solo effort that is an effortless offering to Canada’s great tradition of hoser prog pop. As much as the Ron Sexsmith co-penned “Rescue Us” plods along, the Great Bob Scott’s drums move the fascinating “Lancaster Bomber” along at a visceral clip. “Map of the Genome” bears some resemblance to Tim Vesely’s recent Rheostatics output, while “In the Country” sounds futuristic in spite of its rhythmic allegiance to Otis Redding’s “I Can’t Turn You Loose.” Sexsmith’s pen turns up again for the ambient folk of “Here for You” and the title track has all the majesty of a song from The Wizard of Oz. Hearn’s vision remains romantically innocent, which somehow jives well with the advanced musicianship on The Miracle Mile. (Warner)

Dirty Pretty Things - Waterloo to Anywhere
The demise of the Libertines was a sad story, but not because of Pete Doherty’s downward spiral into drug addiction and constant arrests. The true shame was that a self-absorbed and overrated songwriter overshadowed the band’s true talent — Carl Barât. Don’t believe me? Well, try listening to Babysh ...Read More
Be Your Own Pet - Be Your Own Pet
The offspring of music industry vets, subjects of a label bidding war, signed to Thurston Moore’s hot new avant-rock label, founded in Nashville of all places and all members just happen to be under their country’s legal age of drinking. Yeah, Be Your Own Pet have the story that makes record execs a ...Read More
Oneida - Happy New Year
Oneida have never followed rock music’s rules. For starters, they’ve released a staggering eight albums in ten years, and somehow, each record has been different from the next. This year, the band were supposed to put out their triple-album opus Thank Your Parents, but instead only mustered up 11 tr ...Read More
White Whale - WWI
The concept of a Lawrence, KS super-group won’t be setting the blogs afire — though one listen to WWI probably will. This is a densely rewarding album where every track is enough to satiate hungry fans of prog pop. Really, after hearing the seven and a half thrilling minutes of “O William O Sarah,” ...Read More

So, picture this: the thinking person's Southern rock band that combine the funk of New Orleans, the musical skills of jazz fusion pioneers Weather Report and the sweetest singing and songwriting this side of Lucinda Williams.
