Guano Padano
Guano Padano

By Nereida Fernandes

There's no town, er, genre big enough to contain the Italian experimental folk jazz of Tucson, AZ's Guano Padano. The outfit centres upon Alessandro Stefana and includes multi-instrumentalists Zeno De Rossi and Danilo Gallo. The project boasts such guests as Bobby Solo (a legendary Italian singer), former Jeff Buckley guitarist Gary Lucas, Chris Speed and Alessandro Alessandroni, the famous whistler for distinguished Italian composer Ennio Morricone. As you trek through the record, a complex storyline emerges that makes about as much sense as a REM dream cycle. Song after song conjures a film score sequence that includes a showdown between a spaghetti western Clint Eastwood and The Godfather's Don Corleone, but in a '60s spy thriller. "Danny Boy" shifts back and forth between Americana and Mediterranean influences, with some Mariachi thrown into the mix. "Bull Buster" is set up arcade-style, complete with the tinkling of coins in the intro and gaming sound effects throughout, and just when you think it's the end, it wins a second life! Then there's the highly energetic "Epiphany"; it'll have you so spellbound you'll find yourself careening down the highway, weaving through lanes evading spies. They should have a warning on the jacket: don't listen while driving. (Important)

Do Make Say Think - Other Truths
Though they've never been predictable, twisting and turning down a veering path of whatever post-rock is supposed to be, Do Make Say Think strike a reflective tone on the wondrous Other Truths. By their own reckoning, Do Make's previous acclaimed record, You, You're a History in Rust, ...Read More
Alec Ounsworth - Mo Beauty
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah front-man Alec Ounsworth will have released two albums by the end of this year. In August, he released the debut album from his Flashy Python project, a gritty, bass-heavy garage album characterized by his signature musical looseness and ramshackle production. When producer ...Read More

Oasis perpetrated their entire career never using their heads. It's the reason for both their overwhelming success and eventual undoing: nothing was ever thought out and decisions were based on what mood the band were in that day. Where their early records boasted tracks with more swagger in three m... Full Review
More adventurous post-rock fans may recall that the Berlin trio of Robert and Ronald Lippok, and Stefan Schneider burst onto the avant-electronics scene in the mid-'90s with a flurry of activity that included not only their visionary albums as To Rococo Rot, but also offshoots such as Tarwater and K... It's not until the chorus of "Two Lives Worth of Reckoning," the second song on Soilwork's eighth album, that listeners' ears are going to perk up. Until then it's just the band doing the razor sharp, Gothendeath-lite they helped pioneer, morph and run into the ground. But when said chorus kicks in ... Full Review
