Ziggy Marley Creates Marijuanaman Comic Book

Grammy- winning reggae artist Ziggy Marley has tried his hand at a number of things over the years, from his celebrated music career to his work as an environmental and social activist. His latest venture will stretch his creative powers even further: Marley has just created a comic book character.

A press release from Image Comics explains that the musician conceived the new hero Marijuanaman for the publisher. With good reason, the name of the character brings up a lot of hilarious, half-baked scenarios, but Image says not to jump to conclusions about the sweet-leaf-saluting superhero.

"This is not the comic you think it is!" reads the statement.

The tone of Marley's Marijuanaman actually seems to follow his eco-conscious belief system. "Marijuanaman represents the hope of the future... the hope that we will utilize all of the power that the universe has given us to save our planet," Marley explained.

While Marley created the character, the comic itself will be written by Joe Casey (Godland, Butcher Baker). Artwork will be handled by penciller Jim Mahfood (Kick Drum Comix, Mix Tape).

"It's been a really unique and thrilling project for me to work on," Mahfood said in a statment. "Ziggy Marley is a visionary and Marijuanaman is his, so he's involved in every step, but he's also been cool enough to let Joe and I cut loose and really spread our artistic wings on this project. Through our collaboration, we are creating something that has a unique flavour and feeling. Marijuanaman is not going to be what people except it to be."

The 48-page Marijuanaman will come out on April 20, or, uh 4/20. Pick it up before you pack your bongs, stoner nerds.
