Published Jul 08, 2008From his impossible drumming in Hella, to his impossible drumming in collaborations with Orthrelms Mick Barr, Team Sleep, and Flossin, Zach Hill is, well, an impossibly good drummer from California.
Come this August, however, he will be displaying his impossible compositions at a new level with Astrological Straits, his first solo-record under his own name. The Ipecac-released debut is still highly collaborative, with appearances from Les Claypool (Primus), Marnie Stern, Chino Moreno (Team Sleep, Deftones), Randy Randall and Dean Spunt (No Age), Tyler Pope (!!!, LCD Soundsystem), Jonathon Hicshke (the Flying Luttenbachers), Steve Borth (Satori, RX Bandits), Robbie Moncrief (the Advantage), and Hills Hella band-mates Carson McWhirter and Josh Hill. So, yeah, it's only solo in name.
"Ive been on this path for a while, Hill says. "Theres a common perception that Im this guy who drops in on sessions to add my own thing, or that Im the Hella drummer with a million side projects. I can understand that Im a busy guy, thats part of my nature but this is different. Not to get too lofty, but this album, and these songs, are the culmination of those experiences.
Astrological Straits will be out August 26.
