York Redoubt

York Redoubt's debut record is a sonic blast of fun and pop hooks buried under a warm layer of feedback and guitar squelches. Far from confrontational, the quartet, which include members of Tomcat Combat and the Got to Get Got, spice their instrumental freak-outs with gang vocal melodies as catchy as anything Sloan or Superfriendz ever produced. Possessing a fantastic, fuzzy lo-fi feel, the whole record sounds like an amalgam of every video the Wedge ever played in the '90s. Standouts include "I Said Slightly" and "Upside," both of which are driven by bouncy bass lines and off-kilter drumming. And while not every song hits as hard, take into consideration that the band are barley a year old. If they continue writing at this frantic pace ― they've already recorded a subsequent EP ― their next record will be a stunner.
