YOB's Mike Scheidt Taps Tad to Produce Solo Debut for Thrill Jockey

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Mar 9, 2012

Despite a brief two-year hiatus in the middle of the last decade, Mike Scheidt has been steadily doling out doomy metal jams with his Oregon-based trio YOB since the '90s. The singer/guitarist is getting ready to think outside the realm of psychedelic sludge, however, on his upcoming solo set Stay Awake, his first record for Thrill Jockey.

A press release explains that the disc, which arrives June 12, strays from the doom metal template, taking influence from country and rock acts like Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Merle Travis, and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. To prep for the set, Scheidt learned how to finger-pick a guitar, interestingly enough taking lessons from heralded former Captain Beefheart Magic Band member Zoot Horn Rollo.

Featuring "epic arrangements and dramatic emotions," the six-song release reportedly bears more in common with folk and "classic rock ballads" than Scheidt's usual fare, and was recorded by Pacific Northwest legend Tad Doyle (who, despite what you may have heard, did not put up the Melvins' old tour van on eBay this week) at his Seattle-area Witch Ape Studio. Song samples have yet been made available, but you can check out the tracklisting down below.
