Yak Ballz

Scifentology II

According to "Future Deluxe,” track number seven on Scifentology II, New York-based MC Yak Ballz will never give up. Well, that could be a good or bad thing depending on what you expect from your beats and rhymes. While esoteric enough to be compared to the likes of Hanger 18, he still manages to steer just clear of being lumped into the category of convoluted nonsense over a beat. Of the 13 tracks on Scifentology II, those that succeed do so in spite of Yak’s flow and whiney pitch. The album achieves a unique sound via the work of seven different producers, including Aesop Rock. One of the more creative tracks on the album is "Taking Good Care,” which features Yak Ballz’s Jekyll and Hyde depiction of his feelings for a girl, and is strung together quite cleverly, jumping back and forth from rosy to frenzied. As much as it is a guarantee that no one will ever hear any song from this album on commercial radio, it will certainly thrive and have an extended shelf life at your nearest college radio station, pumped by DJs that just want something different.
