The XX's Jamie Smith Goes Solo for New Single

BY Alex HudsonPublished Sep 28, 2010

Earlier this month, British minimalists the XX told NME that they had " no plan" yet to record a follow-up to their Mercury Prize-winning debut, XX. While we may not be hearing new material from the group in the near future, we will soon be getting a solo single from beatmaker/producer Jamie Smith.

In an interview with XFM, he explained, "It's a tune I made on one of our short breaks from touring and I was eager to make some new music. I got a steel pan and made this track and it is coming out on Numbers Records in about a month or so."

He hasn't yet revealed whether the track will be released under his own name or his band alias, Jamie XX.

There's no word on when the song will be released in stores, but fans can take a listen today when the XX co-host XFM's X-Posure. The show starts at 10 p.m. GMT (5 p.m. EST). Tune in here.

This isn't the first time that Smith has made music without his bandmates. The XX's upcoming remix of Gil Scott-Heron's I'm New Here is essentially a solo work, although it will be released under the band's name.
