Wu-Tang Clan have been going against the grain with their album releases as of late. First there was that collection released in an insanely lavish edition of one, and now they've announced that the long-promised A Better Tomorrow will arrive by Black Friday (November 28), with the album being rolled out as a special package via speaker company Boombotix.
As Billboard reports, this unusual release will come in the form of a wireless Boombot Rex speaker — a portable bluetooth speaker — that will come pre-loaded with a selection of songs from the album. There are eight tracks from A Better Tomorrow, along with two extra instrumentals and an exclusive song "Big Horn B." See the tracklist for this version of the release, dubbed A Better Tomorrow Special Play, below.
As you can see above, the speaker is branded with a yellow and black Wu-Tang logo. Check it out in the promo video at the bottom of this page.
It costs $79.99 and is slated to start shipping out on November 17 in advance of the wide release, which RZA tells Billboard will be out by Black Friday. There will be 1,000 units of the Wu-branded speaker available from Boombotix's online shop and another 2,000 available at Zumiez stores.
UPDATE: Despite what RZA said in the interview, the proper commercial release for A Better Tomorrow is reportedly now slated for December 2 via Warner Bros.
"There's something transcendent about being able to physically hold music," RZA said in a statement. "Back in the day, holding a vinyl helped you appreciate just how much time and sweat goes into creating a single track, let alone an entire album. Over the last decade, we've lost that sensation. With this project, we hope to strengthen the bond between fan and artist. Boombotix puts the music back in your hands so you can stay connected to your favourite artists wherever you go."
