WTCHS Sign to Sonic Unyon for 'It's Not a Cross, It's a Curse!,' Premiere New Song

BY Alex HudsonPublished Mar 7, 2014

Hamilton, ON vowel-hating noise fiends WTCHS have released a string of short-form releases in the past couple of years, and their hard work seems to have paid off in the form of a deal with Sonic Unyon. They're wasting no time in release music through the label, since their It's Not a Cross, It's a Curse! EP will arrive on April 4 through Sonic Unyon/Out of Sound/PERDU.

The EP's songs are laced with ominous distortion, jagged-glass guitar leads and hollered vocals that are typically buried beneath the instruments and provide the songs with their atmospheric underpinning. The results mix post-punk aggression with cryptic alt-rock and occasional shoegaze haziness.

It's Not a Cross, It's a Curse! was produced by the band, along with Adam Sturgeon, with mixing handled by Sturgeon and Nathan Lamb. There are five tracks, plus a cassette-exclusive cut called "Chinese Hand Cream."
