Wooden Shjips Return with 'Back to Land,' Announce North American Tour Dates

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Sep 4, 2013

Consistently trippy psych-rock unit Wooden Shjips have announced they're ready to unleash new tunes this fall via the release of their fourth full-length, Back to Land. Thrill Jockey will have the follow-up to 2011's West in stores November 12.

A press release for the LP notes that this is the first Wooden Shjips album to be conceived outside of San Francisco, resulting from band members Ripley Johnson and Omar Ahsanuddin's move to Oregon. Apparently the change of scenery has introduced "more earthy, grounded tones" to the band's repertoire, with the acoustic guitar, for instance, figuring more prominently into the Shjips' psychedelic sound.

The eight-song album was recorded over an 11-day period at Portland's Jackpot Recording Studios by Kendra Lynn and was mixed by Larry Crane. The LP is said to showcase an "interlocking guitar and organ groove" on "Ruins" and feature some righteous guitar soloing on "Servants," but is nevertheless described as having "the most melodically direct songs" of the band's career thus far.

While full-length song samples have yet to arrive, you can get a sneak preview of Back to Land via an album trailer that you'll find down below.

Wooden Shjips also have a handful of North American tour dates coming up, which find them sharing stages with the likes of Cave, Purling Hiss and Bardo Pond. Canadian dates take place in Toronto and Montreal. While a full tour schedule has yet to be revealed, the band are expected to travel extensively across North America and Europe between November and February.
