Willis Earl Beal

'Curious Cool' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Apr 8, 2014

Following last September's Nobody Knows, outsider experimenter Willis Earl Beal released the surprise album A Place That Doesn't Exist, and now he's followed it up with yet another surprise album called Curious Cool.

Opening cut "Lust" begins with quiet acoustic strums that recall Beal's star-making lo-fi work, but most of Curious Cool is made up of peaceful, keyboard-flecked ballads and soulful crooning.

There are some slight diversions along the way: "Like a Box II" consists of rhythmic blues quirkiness, there are some peculiar electronic plunks during "Stay," and the pretty "Coriander Tree Life" includes a line about masturbating in a river.
