Will Butler did note he had "other projects percolating" upon announcing his exit from Arcade Fire early last year, and it appears one was composing his first solo film score for a new project starring Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson

Multiple outlets report that Butler is set to score Lips Like Sugar, a forthcoming thriller directed by Brantley Gutierrez set during the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Said to centre on the era's "punk and skate worlds of West Los Angeles" [via Deadline], Lips Like Sugar follows Harrelson and Wilson as two former detectives whose lives become intertwined upon a young girl going missing.

Additional casting is underway, ahead of the film entering production later this year. Director Gutierrez has been a visual collaborator of musicians including U2, Foo Fighters, Brittany Howard, Alabama Shakes, the late Tom Petty and many more.

As a member of Arcade Fire, Butler worked with Owen Pallett to compose the score for Spike Jonze's 2013 film Her. Nominated for Best Original Score at the 86th Academy Awards, the film's music was not released until March 2021.

In May, it was reported that Butler had scored Stereophonic, a play written by David Adjmi that will premiere in New York this October.

In June, Butler announced a new album with Sister Squares, who have toured on and off with the songwriter for over a decade. Following a performance at Guelph's Hillside festival later this month, the band will embark on a North American tour in the fall.
