Why? Suffer from 'Mumps, etc.' on New Album

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jul 30, 2012

Why? haven't yet released their Sod in the Seed EP, but the eclectic hip-hop outfit have already announced the follow-up full-length. Curiously titled Mumps, etc., the collection is due out on October 9 through Anticon/City Slang.

Much like the EP that precedes it, Mumps, Etc. was produced by Why?'s own Wolf brothers, and mixed by Graham Marsh (Cee Lo Green, Katy Perry) and Yoni Wolf. It was recorded on two-inch tape with no loops at the Denton, TX studio owned by Centro-Matic's Matt Pence.

For the sessions, Why? recruited a slew of string and horn players, plus an eight-person choir. This resulted in what a press release calls a "meticulous work of morbid fascination and offbeat romanticism." The 13 songs are said to exhibit a "mysterious sickness (perhaps of the mind)" and offer everything from "grinning sun-warped choruses" to "confessionals cut with wry wit and crude details" and "poetic daisy chains."

The title track from Sod in the Seed re-appears on Mumps, etc., so hear that song at the bottom of the page. Just above that is the band's international tour schedule, which unfortunately doesn't include any Canadian dates.
