I Miss This

BY Scott A. GrayPublished Mar 4, 2008

In Weird Weeds’ musical garden, all manner of growth and diversity are encouraged. No bud of an idea is kept from its hour in the sun. I Miss This is a scattershot of styles and approaches, veering from spacious swing pop to Irish folk-infected punk, off-kilter post-rock marches and Floyd-ian moments of hypnotic dissonance. "Red” is a particular stand out, with the tricky timing of the African-influenced percussion and warped beauty of the groaning guitar line. Brief, folky, minute-long tracks featuring Sandy Ewen’s lovely vocals are peppered throughout, pacing the more subversive material with these traditionally appealing pieces. Bizarre chords and harmonies populate these atypically constructed and arranged songs. Experimental noises seep and swirl in the background, almost overtaking the delicate pop disguise the band have assembled for this endearingly idiosyncratic garden of ideas.
