Weerd Science

Friends and Nervous Breakdowns

While this record will most likely go unheard by any actual hip-hop heads, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s still an excellent collection of songs for kids who probably don’t normally listen to much hip-hop. Released by the decidedly non-hip-hop record label Equal Vision, Weerd Science is Coheed and Cambria drummer Josh Eppard. While Coheed may be a decidedly non-hip-hop band, Eppard has a natural lyrical flow and knack for producing catchy beats and infectious choruses. Eppard programmed all the tracks on this disc, and with the exception of a few tracks of scratching and guitar, played all the live instruments. Many of the beats here are reminiscent of the work of Dre, but with a decidedly rock attitude and quality to them. On "Girl, Your Baby’s Worm Food,” Eppard deals with the pregnant girlfriend of a friend by telling her he’s going to punch her in the stomach, and with "Fuck You And Your Filthy A&R Department,” he takes the piss out of major labels, with whom he and his whole musician family have had dealings with for years. While it really is a shame that this record probably won’t travel far outside of the standard emo/indie rock circles in which Coheed and Cambria are so highly regarded, it will certainly be enjoyed by all those fans of the band who are able to keep an open mind, and not worry about a few involving punch-in-the-stomach induced abortions.
