Published Apr 18, 2012This week saw Exclaim! readers once again voicing their opinions over the internet about the latest music news at Exclaim.ca. Two stories really took the lead when it came to generating discussion, with CBC Music coming under fire and Courtney Love continuing to be more than a little loony.
Early last week we reported that CBC's new music streaming service CBC Music had ruffled the feathers of major financial players like Jim Pattison Group, Cogeco Cable Inc. and Quebecor Inc., just to name a few. The organizations have accused CBC of taking away listeners from their own private for-pay services and that the CBC should not be competing with privately owned businesses for online music dominance. Eric Boyko, CEO of Stingray even provided the arguably ridiculous statement that "The only music that you can hear for free is when the birds sing."
You guys jumped on the issue right away, with commenter juepucta saying, "Bunch of assholes. The CBC is something that should make all of us proud." Musician Nicholas Liang made his stance clear when he commented, "These groups do not represent the interest of the people and are glorified rackets gouging the market for the benefit of corporations. Fuck them in the eye."
One brave soul named JonMelanson ventured to agree with the major corporations' side of things when he posted, "The CBC stinks. It's nothing but left-wing propaganda, watched by less than 4% of Canada. Most watch CBC only for hockey. The CBC should be completely de-funded." He wasn't met with any sort of sympathy or agreement from other Exclaim! readers, though. Lightening the mood a bit was commenter abacus, who jokingly mused, "i've gotta check out these singin' birds." Zing!
Elsewhere, the music industry's resident nutjob Courtney Love accused her deceased husband's bandmate Dave Grohl of hitting on her daughter Frances Bean Cobain. On a Twitter rampage, Love remarked, "I'm not mad at her, him i am about to shoot, dead."
The irony was not lost on the fans who believe that Love may have had a hand in Cobain's death, with mike commenting, "i would take this threat seriously. it wouldn't be the first time she murdered someone." On Facebook, we asked whether Courtney Love or Axl Rose had been acting more ridiculously lately, and Exclaim! staffer Vincent Pollard mirrored the comment section's sentiments: "She really shouldn't be talking about shooting people dead, given Nick Broomfield's accusations re. Kurt!" Kent Wakely, however, painted an interesting and imaginative picture for us with his comment: "... And then Ryan Adams came in and started stealing money from Grohl AND Francis Bean, and, and..."
Finally, commenter cassy gets an honourable mention for digging into the vault and commenting on our less than kind 2007 review of Across the Universe with: "this movie rocks and you suck."
