Weaves, Future Islands and Tei Shi Lead This Week's Can't Miss Concerts

Amidst Thanksgiving dinners and family obligations, why not show your gratitude for live music by making it out to a concert this week? Edmonton will play host once more to Up + Downtown Music and Arts Festival as festival season comes to a close, while a plethora of Canadian artists will make their way through the country.

Azealia Banks
 
When she's not busy fighting with Rihanna or sacrificing chickens in a closet, Azealia Banks brings her brand of thumping beats and brash rhymes to audiences around the globe. With her current North American tour underway, the Harlem-born rapper will make a sole Canadian appearance in Toronto this Sunday, October 8.

Blue Hawaii
 
Canadian electronic duo Blue Hawaii are gearing up for the release of Tenderness, their first full-length record since 2013's Untogether, this Friday (October 6). Raphaelle "Ra" Standell, who also serves as Braids' vocalist, and Alexander "Agor" Kerby will tour Tenderness across Canada, making stops this week in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa along the way.

Future Islands
 
Soulful indie rock act Future Islands have spent the majority of 2017 on the road in support of their latest release, The Far Field, and this week will see the trio return to Canadian soil. Having played Toronto's Danforth Music Hall back in May, Future Islands will upgrade to Massey Hall before carrying on to Montreal.

Jenn Grant
 
Characterized by R&B-esque rhythms and synth infusions, Jenn Grant's sixth record, Paradise, demonstrated the Canadian folk pop artist's vast range. This Saturday, October 7, she'll put the audience at Iqaluit's Inuksuk High School into a trance with a performance that's sure to feature cuts from the new album.

New Pornographers
 
Canadian indie rock veterans New Pornographers are currently on the road in support of their latest album, Whiteout Conditions. With Born Ruffians in tow, the Vancouver group will play three nights in the Prairies before heading to Ontario for a performance at London Music Hall.

Tei Shi
 
Buenos Aires-born and Brooklyn-based indie popster Tei Shi will spend the remainder of October touring in support of her debut LP, Crawl Space. This week will see the artist performing as part of Edmonton's Up + Downtown Music and Arts Festival, with additional gigs in Saskatoon, Calgary and Victoria.

At this year's Kazoo! Fest, Meg Remy offered an impressed audience a look at U.S. Girls' fresh expansion into a cohesive eight-piece. Remy and company are sure to have the same effect on Albertan attendees this week as they perform at The Needle Vinyl Tavern in Edmonton and The Palomino in Calgary this Friday (October 6) and Saturday (October 7), respectively.

Up + Downtown Music and Arts Festival
 
The fifth annual Up + Downtown Music and Arts Festival (UP+DT for short) returns to venues across Edmonton this weekend. From Friday (October 6) to Sunday (October 8), fans of DIIV, Wintersleep, Weaves, TUNS, Rae Spoon and many more can experience live performances while sipping on a variety of craft beer — each venue is sponsored by a different brewery or distillery.

Toronto indie weirdos Weaves drop their highly anticipated sophomore record Wide Open tomorrow (October 6) and will immediately head out on the road in support of it. Kicking things off with an album release show at Guelph's eBar, this week will also see the quartet's enthusiastic energy on display in Edmonton, Hamilton, Ottawa and Montreal.
