Weakerthans' John K. Samson Dubbed Winnipeg's Art Ambassador for Music

The amount of mutual love that the Weakerthans' John K. Samson and the city of Winnipeg have for each other is almost sickening. When Samson's not recording live albums or premiering films in his hometown, he's writing detailed songs about specific streets in the province of Manitoba. The latest chapter in their ongoing love affair is that the city has named him its Art Ambassador for Music.

According to a press release, the Winnipeg Arts Council selected "ambassadors" in the fields of theatre, visual arts, music, dance and literary arts to "raise the status of their disciplines in the everyday consciousness of the public." On top of that, the art ambassadors will work on a larger "legacy project" to celebrate arts in Winnipeg.

While it's a little unclear what this exactly means for the singer-songwriter, one thing is crystal clear: John K. Samson and the city of Winnipeg love each other dearly. We wouldn't be surprised if the traffic lights on Portage Avenue were programmed to turn green if he happens to be driving through the neighbourhood. In fact, we're already planning the inevitable news story that Samson has broken the laws of reason and taken Winnipeg's hand in marriage.
