We Barbarians

Headspace

BY Ian GormelyPublished Sep 25, 2011

There's something about this EP that feels too calculated. Originally from Long Beach, CA, this trio migrated to Brooklyn, NY, where they conjured up the five songs on this EP. A perfect synthesis of everything that seems du jour in the NYC hipster enclave, Headspace includes "rich vocals, soaring guitar lines and pounding rhythms," yet doesn't offer anything new. That said, this calculated synthesis produced five great songs that fuse indie rock with U2-sized histrionics ― just try and not sing along with the title track while driving around town. Is it unfair to judge a band for their perceived lack of authenticity? Absolutely. But anyone chasing hip hype should have moved on from this kind of music anyway. The rest of us can just treat these tunes as fist-pumping guilty pleasures.
