Published Sep 23, 2013The Flaming Lips leader Wayne Coyne has an affinity for serving up psychedelic NSFW visuals, which has apparently rubbed the Instagram people the wrong way as they deleted his old account.
The move apparently took place over the weekend, and administrators deleted all of the singer's uploaded images since he joined Instagram, sexy or otherwise. It's assumed that this is because Coyne violated the terms of the service, which prohibit "nude, partially nude, or sexually suggestive photos."
Flaming Lips fansite The Future Heart was outraged by the Instagram ban and have since started up a petition demanding the photos be restored. Claiming Coyne should be treated the same as other apparent violators (they cite Tyler, the Creator, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Chrissy Teigen, Heidi Klum, Miranda Kerr), they also point out that deleting the photos also punishes curious fans.
"The vast majority of his 1227 posts are concert photos, behind the scenes images of his band's projects, shots with other musicians, rock posters, art, and playful selfies in good standing with your policies," the petition explains. "Wayne also frequently uses his account to bring attention to struggling artists and musicians. Banning his account does not stop Wayne from posting more photos (under a different user name), it only prohibits fans from seeing past posts we value and fellow artists from the exposure Wayne is trying to bring them."
Fittingly enough, Coyne has indeed already started up a new account, wayneflaminglip chock full of suggestive, though arty, pics. You can peep all of its psychedelic, spread-legged alien portraits and mannequin groping sessions over here.
