Wavves' Nathan Williams to Release Instrumental Beat Tape with Sweet Valley Side-Project

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jul 18, 2012

As the mastermind of Wavves, California beach enthusiast Nathan Williams specializes in bratty pop punk and fuzzy psych freak-outs. This summer, however, he will shift gears with the new project Sweet Valley, a collaboration with his brother Kynan. Their debut collection Stay Calm will drop on August 7 via Fool's Gold.

Spin reports that the nine-song set, described as an "instrumental beat tape," was co-produced by Williams along with John Hill, who has worked with the likes of Rihanna, Shakira and Santigold.

Judging by the teaser track "Total Carnage," which you can hear at the bottom of the page, this project finds Williams trading in guitar distortion for warped samples and sunny beats. It's not a complete surprise coming from Williams, since it bears a passing resemblance to some of the headier material from Wavves' 2010 album King of the Beach (think "When Will You Come" or "Convertible Balloon").

Fool's Gold describes the release like this: "Whether screwing American Bandstand breaks on 'Total Carnage' or whipping out g-funk synthesizers on 'Dunk Dreams 95,' the brothers Williams have managed to craft the perfect black hole summer soundtrack. Grab the sunscreen, nod your head, and mind the sharks."
