Wavves' Nathan Williams Pulls Back the Curtain on His Part-time Job as a Pop Songwriter for Big Boi, No Doubt

As fans are all aware of, Wavves' Nathan Williams knows his way around a hook. As it turns out, his pop prowess has got him noticed by some of his peers, too.

Williams enlisted the help of producer John Hill, who has previously worked with Santigold, Pink and Shakira, to help out with the new Afraid of Heights, but the two had already worked as a songwriting team, penning songs for some pretty high-profile acts.

"We did a song for Big Boi that I ended up featuring on," Williams tells Exclaim! in a recent interview, referring to the track "Shoes for Running" from the Atlanta MC's latest solo record, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors. "Originally, I had just written it for him as a writer."

Williams also reveals that the duo wrote some songs for No Doubt as well, and "a couple of other things that didn't end up being used."

Williams met Hill through a mutual friend. "I knew somebody who went into the studio and wrote with him and I guess he said something about me when he was in there," says Williams. "[Hill] said he liked King of the Beach. I had never written for other people before, but he asked me if it was something I would be interested in, so I just went in and did a couple things and it turned into this."

Some of their collaborations are still under consideration for various projects, but Williams says he can't reveal just who's mulling over their work. He did say, however, that he enjoyed the process and hopes to do it again when he has the time.

"I've always been a big fan of pop music so it's not out of the realm of possibilities for me to actually write pop songs and enjoy doing it. It's not just about money."

Afraid of Heights is out now on Mom + Pop Records. You can read more of Exclaim!'s newly published Wavves interview here and check out the band's upcoming North American tour stops here.
