As we recently told you, San Diego fuzz pop stalwart Nathan Williams took a break from drugs and fighting to complete the third Wavves album. Now, we're happy to report the album has a title and a release date.
The record is called King of the Beach, and will likely show some change in sonic direction for the band. Where both Wavves and Wavvves were recorded directly into a MacBook's internal microphone, this album was recorded at Mississippi's Sweet Tea Studio with Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse, Elvis Costello, Camper Van Beethoven). In other words, this won't be another lo-fi listening experience.
Another change in direction is the fact that this album was recorded with recent Wavves recruits and former Jay Reatard band-mates Stephen Pope and Billy Hayes. With the clean production and full rhythm section, it's safe to say that this will be a brand new Wavves. Snippets of two snappy new songs can be viewed below.
Speaking with Pitchfork, Williams said these changes were intended to bring the project in new directions. "The last thing I wanted to do was record the same record again," he explains. "A lot of bands kind of get comfortable with something like that; once they know they've got something that some people like, they'll just go and try and recreate that. I just feel like that would've been so fucking boring to do. I wanted to just do something completely different."
King of the Beach will be released on August 3 by Fat Possum. Prior to that, fans can catch the new Wavves in Toronto for NXNE or at Montreal's Il Motore this June. All tour dates are below.
