Waterloo's BUD Goes Totally '90s on Power Pop Single "What's the Point of This? (If I'm Not into It)"

It's the debut single from the former Gold Finch singer

Following the breakup of Gold Finch, Waterloo, ON's Omar Elkhatib now performs solo under the name BUD. With an EP due out in early 2021, he is premiering a video for the project's debut single, "What's the Point of This? (If I'm Not into It)."

The song asks a simple question that functions as the modus operandi for his solo project, as well as for life in general. From its scorching, fuzzy alt-rock chords to its power pop mega-chorus and the accompanying VHS-style green screen music video, it's got a distinct flavour of the '90s and early '00s. There's even some vintage, 8-bit-era Mario.

Elkhatib explained in a statement to Exclaim!:

I really wanted to sum up Canadianisms both musically and lyrically, all the way down to the band name, but do it through the lens of someone who grew up globe-trotting. I made the video with a green screen because what else are you going to do in a pandemic? It's fun like a good Canadian stereotype and really cements the title. I'm into this video and the wacky style, so I did it. Sorry if you're not — how Canadian!
