The Waterboys formed three decades ago, but in all of their years of existence, 2013 finds them playing more North American shows than ever before. This is according to songwriter Mike Scott, who will bring his veteran Celtic rock group to our continent in the coming months.
The trip features a number of Canadian gigs in July, including stops in Ottawa, Toronto, St. John's, Halifax and Vancouver. There are also U.S. gigs, in addition to shows across the pond.
Not only will the Waterboys be touring on these shores, but Scott has recruited a number of American musicians to round out his band.
In a statement, Scott explained, "North America is just about my favourite place in the world to play and I'm thrilled that this year we'll play more concerts there than any year of the Waterboys' existence. Our fall 2013 tour is the longest Waterboys American tour ever and we're doing it with an American lineup. Apart from myself and fiddler Steve Wickham, all the band members are Americans based in the New York area, players I handpicked myself. I can't wait to see what kind of a joyful, wild noise we'll make."
The currently confirmed schedule is below. More North American dates are expected to be added to the fall trek. The band will be playing selections from their back catalogue, in addition to material from their most recent album, An Appointment with Mr. Yeats.
The Waterboys are reportedly compiling a seven-disc box set of material recorded during the sessions for 1988's Fisherman's Blues. It's expected out later this year.
